When will a one-year B.Ed be started in India/Odisha as per NEP 2020? | odishagovtalerts

As per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Government of India has proposed a one-year B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) program for candidates who have already completed a 4-year integrated teacher education programme (ITEP) or possess a Master’s degree in a relevant subject.

However, as of 2025, the one-year B.Ed course has not yet been officially implemented across India or Odisha.

Current Status (as of 2025):

  1. NEP 2020 Vision:

    • NEP recommends that by 2025, the minimum degree for teaching will be a 4-year integrated B.Ed.

    • For candidates with a Master’s degree, NEP proposes a 1-year B.Ed program.

  2. Ground Reality:

    • The implementation is still in progress.

    • Most universities and teacher education institutes still offer 2-year B.Ed programs.

    • No official notification from the Odisha Government or NCTE has announced the launch of a 1-year B.Ed course yet.

  3. Regulatory Authority:

    • The NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) is expected to notify the rollout officially when it begins.

    • Odisha’s State Higher Education and School & Mass Education departments will adapt based on the NCTE's approval.

Expected Timeline:

  • The implementation may begin in phases starting 2026 or beyond, once necessary curriculum and teacher training infrastructure is developed.

  • Pilot programs might start at central universities or top teaching institutes before it becomes statewide.
